“Every inquiry into the Black Summer bushfires so far has, without fail, noted that climate change is fuelling longer, hotter, and more dangerous bushfire seasons,” said Greg Mullins, former Commissioner, Fire and Rescue NSW, and founder of Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA).
“The Federal Government has no excuses left for its failure to achieve deep, sustained cuts to Australia’s emissions, and shift to a clean, resilient economy.
“Every expert bushfire review has highlighted the climate change threat, and every state and territory government has already adopted a net zero emissions target to help address climate change.
“I hope the Royal Commission’s final report will go further than this interim report. It should make it clear that fossil fuels are fuelling climate change and driving much more dangerous weather and bushfires.
“Meanwhile the Federal Government should ensure better resourcing to back-up state and territory emergency services, and make large-scale investments in solutions like renewable energy to strengthen our economy while also addressing the increasing threats driven by climate change.
“Politicians who block efforts to phase out fossil fuels and build a clean economy are increasingly isolated in their dangerous refusal to help deliver a safer climate and stronger economy for all Australians,” said Mr Mullins.
