John Gledhill was appointed to the Rural Fires Board in 1974 as a lookout and firefighter. Throughout his career, he has held many positions, including President of the Tasmanian Branch of the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE), Regional Officer (South), Deputy then Chief Officer, as well as Treasurer of the Australasian Fire Authorities Council. He served as Commander of Task Force Tiger, a select group of rapid-response firefighters. In 1998, during his term of leadership at the Tasmanian Fire Service, he oversaw the containment and extinguishment of life-threatening fires on Mount Nelson. John has represented Tasmania and Australia internationally, and has addressed and advised international governments on several occasions.
