Malcolm Connellan started his firefighting career in 1983 and retired in 2020. He served in a variety of operational and specialised positions, including training, Professional Standards and Conduct Unit, Recruitment and Staffing, Human Resources and the Commissioner’s Chief of Staff. In July 2016, he was appointed Executive Director People and Culture and assumed the rank of Deputy Commissioner.

Deputy Commissioner Connellan holds a Graduate Certificate in Social Science (Emergency Services) and is a Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers and has completed the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) Strategic Command Course. He chaired the AFAC Mental Health and Wellbeing network and was a member of the Employee Relations Network and the Workforce Management Group.
